The America's Sail 2002 started on Thursday June 6, 2002 with participants gathering at Fuik Bay, on the Southeast coast of Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. On Friday morning June 7, 2002, the activities continued with a Parade of Sail into the harbor of the World Heritage City, Willemstad. The ships anchored the whole weekend in Saint Anna Bay, one of the world's most beautiful natural harbors. The crew of the ships, visitors from different parts of the globe and ten thousands of locals enjoyed the cultural shows of the many different nationalities that together form the people of Curaçao. Activities were held at both sides of the harbor. The heart of the capital Willemstad was pounding vigorously at the beat of music and dance that started from the early hours on Friday morning and lasted till late in the evening on Sunday. There were also expositions, street theater and other types of entertainment, such as boat - and helicopter shows.
On every corner and historic alley of the picturesque city, one could smell and enjoy Curaçao's diversified art-culinaire. People looking for souvenirs crowded the shops and hundreds of stands that decorated the sidewalks and squares with colorful Caribbean handcraft.
On Monday, June 10, the ships departed for the class 'A' Race towards Montego Bay, Jamaica and then on to St. Petersburg, Florida, where this third edition of The Americas Sail will end on June 30, 2002.
